These art pieces were commissioned as part of the Broad Impacts associated with the NSF grant “EDGE FGT: Development of genetic and functional genomics resources for Ipomoea (morning glory)” (NSF-2220214, PI: Regina Baucom). They took inspiration from morning glories planted in the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor.
Held with little tendrils
coil against the clock.
Need to lean on cling to
spindled bud
petals folded in a spiral
sinuous thread of genetic
beads buzzing
circadian.
Remembered today what it feels like to twirl open into the morning sun warmed.
Five petals unfurl radially along strong ribs
funnel trumpet invitation.
That same day
wilt and rest.
Five petals
furl inward
into desiccation.
Tomorrow another blooms.
