Carapace, 2023
Silicone, steel. 17” x 73” x 17”
Carapace (held), 2023
Silicone, iron. 22” x 12” x 7”
Carapace is a series of silicone sculptures wherein I create moulted skins from the militarized exteriors of police uniforms. I use the opposition of hard and soft, permeability, malleability and translucency as strategies to critique the punitive carceral system. The back shell, carapace, is a geometric assembly of protective vests cast in blue. The front side, plastron, acts as a belly, vulnerable, in a ghostly, soft gradient facing City Hall. In these works, I was interested in questioning the role of policing in society and how we understand safety, violence, and social order.
